About Malcolm Alexander

Malcolm Alexander was freed 38 years after being wrongly convicted of rape on january 30th. Malcolm was accused of rape of a 39-year-old woman who was managing an antique shop in Jefferson Parish. The woman told the authorities her attacker raped her twice in a bathroom while holding a gun to her head. She then identified Malcolm on March 24, 1980. After looking through hundreds of photos and five photographic lineups she tentatively identified Alexander. The woman still wasn’t sure if it was actually Alexander that had raped her when he was WRONGFULLY convicted.

The victim was only 98% sure that Alexander was the attacker.

Alexander’s attorney basically did nothing to help malcolm and his case. He didn’t call up any witnesses or even make an opening statement. Malcolms case was doomed from the beginning. “His trial lawyer did virtually nothing to defend him” said potkin. The case was basically based off a single identification which the victim wasn’t even completely sure it was him. On December 10, 1980 Alexander was then convicted of aggravated rape and sentenced to life in prison. Malcolm since then continued and continued to regain his innocence!

“”The stakes in this case couldn’t have been higher for Mr. Alexander who faced a mandatory sentence of life without parole, yet the attorney that he entrusted with his life did next to nothing to defend him,” said Vanessa Potkin, post-conviction litigation director at the Innocence Project, which is affiliated with Cardozo School of Law. “It is simply unconscionable. Mr. Alexander was just 21 years old when he was convicted after a trial that began and ended all in the same day. We know there are many more innocent people in prison today because their lawyers did not provide effective representation, or did not have the resources to put on an adequate defense. Without effective defense counsel, our system is nothing more than a conviction mill.”” stated by the innocence project. Malcolm was involved in the innocence project for many many years while in prison he never gave up on his self or his family.

The innocent project first adopted Alexander’s case in 1996 but then learned that the rape kit and semen stained tile had been destroyed for years after his conviction shit. Dude to this the Jefferson parish district attorney’s office moved with the innocent project to abandon Alexander’s conviction and discharge the indictment.

Malcolm’s mother, father and grandson all visited once a week every week until they were no longer physically able to visit. Malcolm’s mother became more difficult to care for and she was aging there for they stopped making trips to see Malcolm. Way before his son would be Exonerated Edmond Alexander passed away in December 2004. Alexander’s sister and mother both wished that Malcolm’s father was still able to be here and see his son be released from prison. They implied that he would be estatic.

Malcolm’s mother sister son and grandson all waited outside Gretna for Malcolm to be released. Malcolm wasn’t mad he was grateful. Malcolm claimed that he didn’t have time to be mad. When Malcolm was released he stated he feels “like a newborn baby”. Alexander was most excited for being able to finally eat a home-cooked meal.
